Because most district officials were forced to live without Internet, e-mail, power and telephone for the past week, communication has broken down, and several long-term questions remain for students and faculty alike.
“In the words of a friend, just dealing with the immediate situation and related logistics has pretty much taken up all our bandwidth,” McGill said. “We’ve found that the simplest attempts to communicate and coordinate have posed tremendous challenges and are immensely time consuming.”
Officials still are in the process of rescheduling quarterly exams, report card schedules and dealing with other similar problems. As the village and district continue to recover from the storm, long-term issues will be resolved once immediate matters are addressed.
The district still is uncertain how they will make up for the week of missed classes. It is not permitted to have classes on Veterans' Day or Saturdays, ideas discussed internally. There still is flexibility to meet state requirements as there is a scheduled conference day in January and backup days in March, though more inclement weather may put the district further behind.
According to McGill, the state legislature may yet decide to waive or alter minimum attendance requirements so the district will wait to make any immediate decisions.
