Students Drip with Sweat in Scarsdale Schools

Students at Greenacres Elementary School were trying to take off their clothing, dripping with sweat and were complaining because of the high temperatures and lack of air conditioning on Wednesday.

"It is sweltering," said Carly Levine, a Scarsdale High School senior doing her senior options at Greenacres. "I can't concentrate."

Levine and some of her friends who are also working at Greenacres said that some classrooms have fans in them while others do not. They also said some teachers can open doors in their rooms while others can't due to fire hazards.

Only a small handful of classrooms throughout the district have air conditioning due to particular students medical conditions that require it and no lunchrooms, gyms or multi-purpose rooms are air conditioned throughout the district. Administrative offices in schools and the central office have air conditioning as a result of having 12-month employees, said Victoria Presser, Scarsdale School District spokeswoman.

"I think in Scarsdale there should be air conditioning," said Alissa Appel, a mother of Heathcote Elementary School and Scarsdale Middle School students. "I am concerned [about the heat] and I hope that the teachers are paying attention to anyone who is hot."

No relief is coming for Scarsdale students this week. The Weather Channel is predicting a high temperature of 98 degrees for Thursday and a high temperature of 81 degrees for Friday.
