Westchester High School Students Advance To State Envirothon

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Ossining High School’s Team 10 received the highest score among Westchester competitors in this year’s Hudson Valley Regional Envirothon.

Held on April 14 at the Sharpe Reservation in Fishkill, the Hudson Valley Regional Envirothon encourages students to learn about the environment through testing their knowledge on five environmental topics: soils, aquatics, forestry, wildlife and a current environmental issue. This year’s issue was “Invasive Species.”

Ossining’s Team 10 placed third overall out of the 21 participating teams in the Envirothon. John Jay High School’s Team 12 placed second among Westchester schools and Ossining’s Team 9 placed third. Team 10 now goes on to the state competition.

“For the last eight years, Westchester has had more teams competing at the Hudson Valley Regional Envirothon than any other,” said County Executive Rob Astorino. “Congratulations and best of luck to the Ossining High School team will at the state competition.”

A total of eight teams from five Westchester schools participated in the Envriothon:

  • John Jay High School (two teams), Katonah-Lewisboro School District
  • Ossining High School (two teams), Ossining Union Free School District
  • Yorktown High School (two teams), Yorktown Central School District
  • Woodlands High School, Greenburgh Central School District
  • Walter Panas High School, Lakeland Central School District

The Westchester County’s Department of Planning and the Soil and Water Conservation District co-sponsored the Hudson Valley regional competition and will co-sponsor Ossining High Schools’ participation in the New York State competition.
