Cain ran a personal best 8:58.48, two seconds ahead of runner-up Lilian Rengeruk of Kenya. It was the first world title for Cain, who now trains in Eugene under former U.S. distance running star Alberto Salazar.

With the Eugene crowd roaring in approval, Cain surged in the final 200 meters to pull away from the field. Cain fought getting boxed in by her rivals at several points during the race, including one nerve-racking stretch on the final lap. The race was still tightly bunched entering the final lap, and Cain finally pulled ahead as she and Rengeruk rounded the final turn.

“The last 50 meters was just so good,” Cain said in an interview on MileSplit.com. “There was nowhere else they would have been that loud for me.”

Cain is the first American to win a medal in any distance longer than 800 meters in the 28-year history of the World Junior Championships.
