Haindl Field will be a sea of blue on Saturday, as Eastchester kicks off the first of its fundraising games that will be played this month. The entire school community will come together in April to raise awareness of autism, which has become an increasingly large problem in America.

The idea to “light it up blue” actually derived with Eastchester’s Student Athletic Council, who brought the idea to Athletic Director Jason Karol. SEPTA will provide refreshments during the game, while the Eastchester Eagles Sports Club donated blue socks and other Eagle-centric giveaways that will be raffled off during the game.

“Having the support of SEPTA and the Sports Club truly make this a community effort. Admission is $5, with all proceeds benefiting autism awareness.”

According to a recent report by the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in 68 children has an autism spectrum disorder. New data collected from the Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network has shown a 30 percent spike in autism diagnoses among children in 11 states. As recently as 2006, just one in 110 children were diagnosed with the disorder.

“This is a special opportunity to educate the public about autism,” he said. “The student-athletes came up with this idea and it is very gratifying to work with them for such a worthwhile cause.”

The Eastchester Eagles will face the Scarsdale Raiders at 8 p.m. on Saturday night at Haindl Field. There will be a $5 admission fee, with all proceeds being used to benefit the cause.
