The official Twitter account of the NFL was hacked Tuesday and a tweet was posted with erroneous information that commissioner Roger Goodell of Bronxville had died, a league spokesman said.
The 12:36 p.m. tweet, which was soon deleted, read: "We regret to inform our fans that our commissioner, Roger Goodell, has passed away. He was 57. #RIP"
The hacker's tweet was re-tweeted approximately 2,000 times before it was deleted from the NFL's account, which has more than 19 million followers.
Before the NFL regained access to the account, Brian McCarthy, another NFL spokesman, tweeted from his Twitter account (@NFLprguy) that Goodell “is alive and well.”
The league is now working with law enforcement to investigate the hack's source.
Goodell made light of the incident in a tweet posted late Tuesday afternoon, writing, "Man, you leave the office for 1 day of golf w/ @JimKelly1212 & your own network kills you off. #harsh"
