The Scarsdale sophomore received another chance, reaching the Edgemont Wrestling Tournament's 132-pound final Saturday, and Baruch made good on a promise to himself.
Baruch secured a takedown of Pearl River’s Nick Simeti with 10 seconds remaining to win the 132-pound championship. It was Baruch’s first varsity tournament title.
“After losing in the final at Scarsdale, I wanted to win this one,” Baruch said.
The match was even at 7-7 and appeared to be headed for overtime. However, Simeti took a shot attempt and Baruch used it to his advantage. He gained control of Simeti for the takedown and the decisive points.
“He was tough and he just kept coming at me,” Baruch said. “When he came at me the last time, I was able to get the underhook in and get my two. Once I got the takedown, I knew I had to keep him down and I would win.”
