NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- Despite public outcry, Adolpho Birch, NFL senior vice president of labor policy, said he felt t he two-game suspension issued to New Rochelle native Ray Rice for a physical altercation with his now-wife was "appropriate," according to CBS Sports.

Brich was interviewed on ESPN Radio's "Mike & Mike" on Monday morning, July 28, and said that he felt the punishment handed out to Rice is one that would dissuade other players from engaging in similar activities, CBS Sports reported.

Critics say the suspension is too light, pointing to players who get suspended for four games after testing positive for marijuana.

Rice elected not to appeal the suspension, CBS Sports said.
