Scarsdale Field Hockey All Tied Up With Hastings

HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – Scarsdale’s field hockey co-captains Kiki Yawer and Julia Mayer stood side by side after Monday’s 0-0 tie at Hastings and agreed that the Raiders lack of scoring so far this season can be fixed.

“We’re getting the ball there, but we haven’t been able to make our shots,” Yawer said. “You don’t have that many chances to score, so we have to be able to take shots when we have them. It just seems like we get the ball in front of the goal and then hesitate or don’t make a good enough shot.”

The Raiders moved smartly up and down the Burke Estate Field throughout the game and had 11 corners to just one for Hastings. But despite the opportunities in the offensive zone, Hastings’ defense and a slight hesitation on the part of Scarsdale’s offense extended the scoring drought.

“We’ve had two 0-0 ties,’ Mayer said. “We have a good defense and we move the ball into position. We’re just not hitting the shots we should hit. I think we can be more aggressive and the goals will come. But we have to score goals to win games.”

The Raiders will get their next chance to score a goal and win a game today (Tuesday) at Pelham High School at 4:30 p.m.
