Scarsdale Football Aims For Second Straight Win

SCARSDALE, N.Y. – Scarsdale High School was facing a major crossroads to its 2012 varsity football season when it played White Plains.

The Raiders lost their first two games and could not afford an 0-3 start if they wanted to qualify for the playoffs. But Scarsdale stuffed White Plains on a two-point conversion in overtime to earn the win and gain confidence.

Scarsdale returns to the field 1:30 p.m. Saturday against Lincoln, also sporting a 1-2 record.

“Last week was extremely important for us,” Scarsdale assistant coach Jay Ciraco said. “The team set high goals for the year and we got off to a rocky start. The win was great for the morale of the team and it proved that we have the ability to play against the big, power football teams.”

Scarsdale displayed a big-play offense as halfback Robert Plummer had three long touchdown runs, including two in the second half. The Raiders also unveiled a new dimension, with Jeremy Smith kicking field goals of 37 and 29 yards.

Even though Lincoln has lost its previous two games, Scarsdale is not taking anything for granted.

“We do not take any team lightly,” Ciraco said. “We came into this week and prepared like any other. Lincoln has good athletes. We have to make sure we execute on our end offensively, with no turnovers or mental mistakes. On defense, we must tackle in the open field. That has been our main point we’ve stressed.”
