Scarsdale Girls Dominate Against Gorton

YONKERS, N.Y. – Scarsdale girls’ basketball coach Mike Blanco had to leave the game against Gorton early on Wednesday to attend an event back at his own high school.

His team certainly put on a show for everyone else in attendance.

The Raiders (7-5) thrashed Gorton, 80-26, at Cross Hill Academy behind Shelby Zucker’s 19 points. The defense sparked the offense, as Scarsdale created several turnovers and continually scored on the fast break.

“That’s something we’ve been working on a lot lately is creating offense from the defensive end,” said first year assistant coach Genette Zonghetti. “And it’s something we really stressed at halftime that we wanted to create turnovers to create points.”

Scarsdale also spread the ball incredibly well throughout the afternoon. Twelve players scored for the Raiders. Casey Pearlman scored 16 points and Abigail Pearlman added 10. Amanda Grabanica, Rachael Spiro and Kyra Kline each added eight points.

Jasmin Hairston-Harris led Gorton with 10 points. She was the only player on her team to score in double digits.

Zonghetti said her team would not take its foot of the gas against Gorton because it will play in a tournament this weekend at Mahopac that also features Lakeland and Clarkstown South.

The Raiders, she said, wanted to use the game against Gorton to prepare for the tournament and the playoffs by working on the offense.
