SCARSDALE, N.Y. At this point in the basketball season, most teams with a 4-9 record would be in full panic mode. But Scarsdale coach Jon Feld said Tuesday that he knows eight of his teams nine losses are the result of a brutal schedule.
The Raiders have lost twice to White Plains and New Rochelle and once to Mount Vernon, Clarkstown South, Fox Lane and Byram Hills. Feld explained his logic behind the grueling slate after the Raiders latest loss to the Bobcats on Tuesday.
People look at me and someone says, Wow, why do you do that, Feld said. I say, Because I dont back down. I dont want our kids to think its okay to back down from anything.
Scarsdale already faces tough challenges annually in Mount Vernon, New Rochelle and White Plains in their league. Non-league matchups against teams like Fox Lane and Byram Hills only make the schedule that much more daunting.
But Feld said the challenges strengthen his team.
When you collect all these different experiences you gain experience of what (opponents) do well, both on the offensive side and on the defensive side, Feld said.
After the loss to Byram Hills, Feld explained exactly how they absorb those experiences. Homework.
I told my kids today, each of you has to come back to practice tomorrow with one thing that Byram Hills did well defensively and one thing that they did well offensively, Feld said.
The Raiders are not yet mathematically eliminated from the postseason. Feld said that Scarsdale can hang with the upper echelon teams if the Raiders advance to the playoffs.
I know this sounds crazy at 4-9, but we can compete with a lot of the teams in (Class) AA that are going to be seeded ahead of us, assuming we get in, Feld said. Whether we win or not is a different story, but we can certainly compete.
