Scarsdale’s Jiang Wins At Conference Swimming

RYE, N.Y. – Joy Jiang sat under an umbrella at the Westchester County Club Pool Thursday, a recent winner of the 8-Under girls freestyle event at the Westchester Swim Conference Swimming Championships looking forward to her next swim.

“I guess I like swimming – I won the freestyle,” the shy Jiang said in an almost inaudible voice. “I came second in the backstroke (her best event) and I could have won.”

Jiang and her Scarsdale Municipal Pool teammates participated in Thursday’s semifinal heats and final in the closing meet of the Westchester Swim Conference summer season. Swimmers from ages 6-17 competed in qualifying swims Monday through Wednesday in hopes of making the finals.

Jiang, who attends Fox Meadow School and began swimming two years ago, has taken to the water well and Thursday’s results bought a slight smile but few words in boast.

“I could have done better in the backstroke, but I moved over in the lane and didn’t go straight,” Jiang said. “But I’m going to be in the butterfly event too.”

Asked if she enjoyed watching the 2012 Olympic Games in London, Jiang said she had been watching swimming and gymnastics.

“I really like gymnastics and I watched swimming on television,” Jiang said. “Swimming takes a lot of practice.”

For the young Scarsdale swimmer with signs of talent after just two years in the water, the day of swimming championship was already a success with the hope of more to come.
