SCARSDALE, N.Y. – Shelby Zucker had just converted a layup on a back-door cut against New Rochelle on Monday when the girls basketball game came to a stop.

The Scarsdale senior was preparing to play defense when she noticed this; then her teammates streamed toward her in excitement. What Zucker did not know was that the basket resulted in her reaching 1,000 varsity points.

Zucker, a four-year varsity starter, finished with a career-high 32 points in the 76-61 victory. Her 1,000th point came with 3:44 remaining in the game, assisted by Alexis Klein.

“I knew I needed around 30 points, but I had never scored more than 30 points before,” said Zucker, who will attend Emory University in September and play basketball. “When the game stopped, I was really confused. Then the announcer made the announcement.

“My teammates ran out on the court and gave me a big hug, and then my coaches gave me a hug. It was unbelievable and so exciting, and for everyone to be there was even more amazing,” she said.

Zucker said that closing out the regular season with the win over New Rochelle made the milestone even nicer.

“This was a really big game for us because we had lost to New Rochelle by 15 points the last time we played them,” Zucker said. “With the win we also secured a home game for our first sectional playoff game.”

Scarsdale is seeded eighth and will host No. 9 North Rockland on Friday in a first-round game in the Section 1 Class AA Girls Basketball Championships.
