Suffern Late Touchdown Shocks Scarsdale In Football

SUFFERN, N.Y. — Scarsdale High School raced out to a three-touchdown lead midway through the second quarter Friday night and was on the verge of blowing Suffern out of the Section 1 Class AA football game.

Suffern, though, battled back, surging in the second half and scoring with 20 seconds left to shock Scarsdale, 35-28.

Suffern quarterback Chris Gragnani connected with Richie Horowitz on a 4-yard touchdown pass with 20.3 seconds remaining for the winning score. It capped a 21-point second half for the Mounties, who trailed 21-14 at the half.

After Suffern took the lead, Scarsdale’s Andrew Verboys Jr. had an 18-yard scoring run to even the score at 28-28 with 5:12 remaining in the game. But Suffern took the ensuing kickoff and drove 65 yards in 10 plays, capped by Gragnani’s aerial strike.

Scarsdale halfback Robert Plummer ran for a game-high 191 yards on 14 carries. He had scoring runs of 48 and 11 yards. His 35-yard scamper set up Verboys’ touchdown.

Cornerback Giancarlo Cugini had a big game with an interception and a forced fumble, and he batted away two passes.
