RYE, N.Y. – A contingent of young swimmers from Eastchester, Scarsdale and New Rochelle proved that Wykagyl Country Club will have a strong summer swim team for the next few years with multiple victories at the Westchester Swim Conference Swimming Championships on Thursday.

Justin Gager, Ellis Ryan, Aidan Lee, Jason Amato, Ian Steffensen and Niall Ryan, all between 8 and 10 years old, dried off under the Wykagyl banner at Westchester Country Club Thursday, getting ready for the later relay events.

“I got first in the 25 freestyle (6-Under) and Ellis took third place and we have more events later,” six-year-old Aidan Lee said. “This is a fun meet. This is my second year swimming here.”

The Wykagyl young bunch participated in Thursday’s semifinal heats and finals in the closing meet of the Westchester Swim Conference summer season. Swimmers from ages 6-17 competed in qualifying swims Monday through Wednesday in hopes of making the finals.

Steffensen, who raced to a first-place finish in the 8-Under 25-yard backstroke in a time of 14.66, said the Swim Conference meet was a highlight of the summer.

“This is better than the County meet because you have a chance to be in a lot of events,” Steffensen said. “I have been swimming for three years.”

Amato, an 8-Under winner in the boy’s 25-yard backstroke, said he liked swimming with his friends and family.

“My brother is swimming and I have been swimming for three years,” the backstroke specialist said. “We are friends and we have a great time in the summer and swimming together at meets.”
