Good point! If this bill were to go into effect today, it might lower the price of gas by a cent or two (provided the distributors pass the decrease along to consumers). Eliminating zone pricing would have a much more significant downward impact on gas pricing in Fairfield county - which has been tabbed by the Democratic legislators to subsidize the gas oricing of the rest of Connecticut. Mr. Duff, you'll get a lot more mileage with your Fairfield county constituents if you act to abolish zone pricing in Connecticut, which in a monopolistic manner inflates our gas prices by 10-15 cents a gallon over the rest of the state. View Comment

While there certainly is an aspect of compassion to be attributed to the selectmen's actions last week concerning Mr. Hazel's plight, one has to wonder why they went about the entire process so shrouded in secrecy. If this is solely a magnanimous decision, why did everything need to be conducted so secretly? What are the selectmen trying to hide? Can anyone say that Mr. Hazel is truly better off living alone in his desolate hovel rather than under the care of assisted living? Do you call that compassion? Lastly, I might be more sympathetic to Mr. Greiser's views on this sorry situation were he not a close neighbor (and probable) acquaintance of Mr. Hazel, who reportedly is a steady customer of the Greiser's store around the corner. Tired of high Fairfield county gasoline prices? Rather than doing nothing and feeling helpless, please contact your state legislators to urge them to legislate a repeal of connecticut's zone pricing regulations. These regulations artificially inflate Fairfield county gas prices by a significant amount over the rest of the state. Why should it cost a lot more to purchase gasoline in Bridgeport, which is closer to gasoline distribution points, than it does in the far reaches of the state? John McKinney's continuing quest to control state spending should be applauded. This state will go nowhere without it. Capping the gas tax is also a great itdea, but Mr. McKinney would also benefit his Fairfield county constituents by getting current "spot zoning" provisions repealed. Why should Fairfiled county residents - especially those in its poor cities - be forced to spend roughly 15 cents more per gallon of gasoline than the rest of the state, thanks to spot zoning? If Mr. Herrmann had a baby or an infirm individual in his household, I doubt that he would think that "two or three days is a reasonable expectation to be without power". How horribly callous of him. In Fairfield county's 21st century, the only "reasonable" expectation is that electrical power be always available. Anything less is a failure of the State's regulatory mission to oversee the utilities and their infrastructure. United Illuminating's website has been down all day today (Monday ofter the storm).
