With temperatures set to soar into the 90s with real-free temperature reaching around 100 degrees in much of the area, the National Weather Service has issued an Air Quality Alert for Wednesday.

The alert is in effect from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and includes Westchester, Rockland, Putnam and Orange counties. It does not include Dutchess.

Wednesday's high temperature will be between 91 and 93 throughout the Hudson Valley. High humidity and a scorching sun will result in real-feel temperature reaching as high as 100 degrees in some spots. (See chart above.)

Air quality levels are predicted to be greater than an air quality index value of 100 for the pollutant of ground level ozone.

The air quality index -- or aqi -- was created to determine different pollutants to one scale. The higher the aqi value, the greater the health concern.

When pollution levels are elevated, the New York State Department of Health recommends limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects.

People who may be especially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutants include the very young, and those with pre-existing respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease.

There is a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 11 p.m. Wednesday.

There is a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms after 2 p.m. Thursday, with the high temperature again hitting the low 90s under mostly sunny skies.
