Strauss, who spent more than 40 years volunteering in various capacities in the village, was named as the 78th recipient of the prestigious award. During his life, the former mayor served on more than 25 different civic organizations and committees in Scarsdale.

Jon Mark, the chairman of the Scarsdale Bowl Committee said Strauss’ diverse resume of volunteering made him an ideal candidate to receive the distinction.

“The Scarsdale Bowl was initiated in 1943 to recognize an individual’s outstanding contributions to the civic life of this community,” he said. “(Strauss’) civic service in a wide variety of capacities is a role model for volunteerism in the village.”

During his life, Strauss served as treasurer of the Scarsdale Volunteer Ambulance Corps., was on the board of Scarsdale and Edgemont Family Counseling and currently volunteers at the White Plains Hospital. During his time as mayor – from 2005-07 – he helped develop Christie Place, installed more visible street signs village-wide and helped he ambulance corps secure a new headquarters.

As the chairman of the Scarsdale Advisory Council on Human Relations, Strauss was instrumental in establishing the home for the developmentally disabled on Foxhall Road.

Outside of Scarsdale, Strauss served as the national director of the Conference of Christians and Jews, director of the Greater New York Council of the Boy Scouts of America, Westchester Chapter President of the American Jewish Committee and was a member of the Ellis Island Museum Rededication Committee.

“His selfless contribution of time and energy to community affairs epitomizes the principles symbolized by the Bowl,” Mark said. “We are delighted to recognize him as this year’s honoree.”
