Breaking News: Man Caught After Fleeing Scene Of Hit-Run Involving Boy In Westchester

Gloria Markuson, 88, Scarsdale Civil Lawyer

SCARSDALE, N.Y. – Gloria Crowley Markuson, 88, a longtime resident of Scarsdale, died April 5.

Markuson was the first woman installed as the president of the 2,600-member Westchester County Bar Association.

Markuson was born Sept. 12, 1923, in New York City to the late Pearl Caroline (Witt) and Joseph Crowley. She married the late Richard Douglas Markuson on Nov. 26, 1949.

Markuson attended the Ursuline School of New Rochelle, Rosemont College and Fordham Law School. She had a private practice in Westchester County with offices in White Plains, New Rochelle and Scarsdale. Markuson graduated from Fordham Law School in 1946, practiced civil law since 1954 and was the co-author of several nationally used law texts.

In the course of her career, Markuson repeatedly broke down gender barriers. She was the first woman to become a member of the White Plains Bar Association, the first woman to serve on the Board of Directors of the Westchester County Bar Association and the first woman to serve as president of the Westchester County Legal Aid Society.

Markuson was a member of the Eastchester, New Rochelle, Yonkers and White Plains bar associations and a life fellow of the American Bar Association and New York Bar Foundation.

She is survived by two sisters, Patricia O'Sullivan and Joan DeWitt. Her brother, Joseph Crowley, and sister, Colleen Salzberg, predeceased her.

Friends may visit from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday at Fred H. McGrath and Son Funeral Home in Bronxville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Joseph's Church in Bronxville. Burial will follow at Ferncliff Cemetery.
