Residents in Greenburgh are being cautioned to monitor their water use as crews begin painting and rehabilitation efforts at the Hartsdale Water Storage Tank.

The Greenburgh Consolidated Water District announced on Wednesday that the Hartsdale Water Storage Tank at Birchwood Lane will be temporarily removed from services for painting and rehabilitation.

According to officials, interior work to the tank and its structure began on Monday and will continue through the end of May, in advance of the summer. The tank will then be put back into service for the summer and shut down again in September for exterior painting and additional rehabilitation work.

Officials noted that there will not be significant service impact during the scope of the project, though some residents may experience slight decreases in water pressure during the peak usage periods.

“The phased work schedule is planned to provide optimal conditions for both the needed rehabilitation work and to minimize potential impacts to our customers,” officials stated. “While this tank is out of service we ask all residents within the Hartsdale area to conserve water and especially to refrain from lawn watering during the early morning hours.  These actions will lessen chances for potential impacts.  Lawn watering and automatic irrigation systems place the most demand on our water system and can lessen water pressure.”

To assist residents, the Greenburgh Consolidated Water District offered several tips for local residents:

  • Talk to your lawn care professional about proper irrigation habits. Most lawns only require 1-inch of water per week. Review your watering schedule and adjust the settings as necessary to reduce unnecessary water consumption and promote a healthier lawn.
  • Make sure your sprinkler system's timer/controller is operating correctly Many homeowners don't realize their sprinkler systems are malfunctioning because the systems are programmed to operate overnight or very early in the morning and they never observe them in operation.
  • Adjust the timer/controller on automatic sprinklers according to seasonal water demands and weather conditions, turn off sprinklers when it's raining or install a rain shut-off device
  • Avoid watering on windy days, adjust sprinklers so they water the lawn, not the pavement
