SCARSDALE, N.Y. -- Joy Jacobson is passionate about helping people feel great and will be doing so this fall at the Scarsdale Adult School.

Originally trained as a dancer and involved in the fitness industry for more than 25 years, Jacobson is a certified personal trainer.  However, she prefers to spend most of her professional time teaching group classes to older adults, teaching them the Alexander Technique, The MELT Method, and MELT Strength.

As an Alexander teacher, Jacobson shows students how to become more aware of the movements that are causing unnecessary tension and pain, and how to change those patterns for the better. It is very much a mind/body approach that helps people to improve posture and how they take part in daily activities, such as sitting at a computer, to the most challenging ones, like running a marathon or playing an instrument.

Jacobson became intrigued by the MELT Method because it is a way for people to get themselves out of pain and maintain their bodies as they age. Using soft rollers and balls, this technique rehydrates the fascia, or connective tissue of the body, which is like a three-dimensional scaffolding that supports every muscle, bone and nerve. When dehydrated, the spaces in the body become compressed and low level inflammation starts to occur.

Jacobson is one of only a few instructors in Westchester to be teaching these techniques.

Jacobson's class at the school aims to help students strengthen the body by opening up the neurological pathways that have shut down due to injuries, compensations, pregnancy or other causes. Its focus will be on improving the timing and stabilizations of the shoulder girdle, the pelvic girdle and the core. Rollers and Thera-Bands will be used in very specific exercises that can create a profound effect on posture, reducing and eliminating pain, and improving athletic performance.

To learn more about these tours, go here or call the school at 914-723-2325 between 9 a.m. and noon weekdays.
