According to the Better Business Bureau, scammers are calling victims under the guise of a delivery company with a package on the way. Soon after, the doorbell rings, and someone with a gift basket asks for a debit or credit card to pay a nominal "verification fee."

The "card scanner" in question is actually a device that collects the card number, personal identification number and security code of the victim for the scammer to use to commit identity theft and make unauthorized charges.

Residents are advised to be suspicious of packages from unrecognized delivery services and to not give their card to someone at the door.
