Richard A. Donaldson, 17, was certified to stand trial as an adult in the death of Kenneth Spalter, 72, who was shot once in the throat around 10 p.m., Feb. 10, as he and his 71-year-old wife got out of their vehicle at their daughter's home, said Schron Y. Jackson, Public Information Division.

Donaldson, who was 16-year-old at the time, and another man approached the couple and demanded their keys and the car on the 3800 block of Juniata Street, police said.

Spalter’s wife gave Donaldson the keys while the other man got into the driver’s seat. Donaldson also grabbed her laptop bag while the other man grabbed Spalter's backpack. Police say the man shot and killed Spalter when he struggled for the backpack.

The two got away when another car pulled up and they jumped in and drove away, police said.

Donaldson was charged on Friday with second-degree murder, two counts of first-degree robbery, two counts of armed criminal action, resisting arrest, leaving the scene of a crash and stealing a firearm, all felonies, police said.

Bail for Donaldson was set at $750,000 cash, Jackson said.
