Stanford Basketball Player Peter Sauer, 35, Dies

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – Peter Sauer, a Scarsdale resident and member of the Stanford University basketball team that went to the Final Four in 1998, died Sunday night at about 9:46 p.m. in White Plains, Public Safety Commissioner David Chong said. He was 35.

Sauer died of an enlarged heart, known as cardiomegaly, according to the Westchester County Medical Examiner’s office, which performed an autopsy on the Scarsdale resident's body Tuesday afternoon. The office will continue its examination for further information. There was also a skull fracture that appears to have resulted from his collapse to the floor.

Sauer collapsed while playing basketball in a Gardella park summer league. He was shooting free throws when he collapsed and fell backwards, hitting his head. He was treated on scene and taken to the White Plains Hospital Emergency Room, but couldn't be revived.

The Pittsburgh, Penn. native made four-straight NCAA tournament appearances during his time at Stanford University.

Sauer is survived by his wife, Amanda, and three children.
