The couple couldn’t file their tax return April 3 because it had already been filed. Their accountant also found out that their 2011 taxes had been filed twice. An unknown party filed in their name, and then the victims filed in December 2012. Because the victims filed late, their taxes were not processed until February 2013 and the error went unnoticed, according to the police report.

The victims told police the IRS didn’t notify them that their taxes for 2011 had been filed twice. But there had been no fraudulent activity on his bank accounts, credit reports or utility bills, they told police.

The IRS required the couple to file a police report for an investigation to begin into where the tax return and refund were sent. If arrested, a suspect would face a charge of third-degree identity theft, a misdemeanor.

The previous day, another Scarsdale man reported that someone tried to buy a $300 iPhone 5 from BestBuy.com using the victim’s AT&T account, and then tried to change it to his name.

AT&T called the victim April 2 to confirm a request to change his account information, which he had not done, according to the police report. He told police he believes his Social Security number had been compromised. Police told him to contact the credit unions and have his accounts monitored.

If arrested, the suspect would face a charge of third-degree identity theft, a misdemeanor.

Police received another report of third-degree identity theft April 1 from a Scarsdale man who noticed two purchases totaling $1,477.59 on his Citibank credit card that he did not make or authorize. Police were investigating.
