According to police, at approximately 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 29, a Rectory Lane resident picked up relatives from the airport, only to return a few hours later to find that someone had entered the home.
The victim’s curiosity was piqued when he entered his home to see a basement door open that had been closed three hours earlier. That curiosity turned to fear, when upon investigating his ransacked bedroom, he thought he could smell cologne, prompting him to make an emergency call to police, fearing that the burglar was still in the house.
Upon arrival at the residence, police did not find any immediate threat, though the burglar made off with the contents of one jewelry box, and an open safe was found next to the open basement door, which police believe was the entryway for the suspect.
There was no sign of forced entry into the house, though police found that the handle of the access gate to the backyard was ripped from the door, along with the locking mechanism, making this burglary unique from other Scarsdale larcenies, where suspects have gained access to homes by breaking in through back doors.
“The homeowner advised that the safe in question is normally kept in the master bedroom closet, and that the obvious pry marks are new,” Police Officer Michael Coyne said in his report. “The only items remaining within the safe appeared to patrol to be personal paperwork such as birth certificates, titles of vehicles, etc.”
