CORTLANDT, N.Y. -- Members of the Garden Club of Peekskill helped liven up the lobby of the Hudson Valley Hospital Center last week with dozens of colorful flower displays.
The flowers were part of the club's flower show, "On The Riverfront," a small show comprised of entries submitted by club members. Judges came Thursday morning to give out awards, and the show ran all day on Thursday and Friday in the hospital lobby.
There are about 50 active and 75 total club members. Many members, like Arlys Mikolay, are retired.
"I don't have much land to plant so I figured I could be around this kind of stuff," Mikolay said.
The flowers were judged in several different divisions: design, horticulture and special exhibits. Each division had different categories, such as festival.
"The Peekskill Waterfront has festivals, so we used that as one of the ideas behind the flower show, since the theme is on the riverfront," Mikolay explained.
Other classes included "Washed Ashore," in which some displays were made from driftwood and other things that have washed ashore from the Hudson River.
The Garden Club of Peekskill was started in 1931 and is a member of the Federated Garden Clubs of New York State and the National Garden Club. The club awards a scholarship to a graduating Peekskill Student pursuing a career in environmental science, horticulture or flora culture. The club also runs the children's garden club at Field Library.
