Scarsdale Voters Approve $18M Schools Referendum

SCARSDALE, N.Y. – Scarsdale voters overwhelmingly voted to approve the $18.1 million school bond referendum on Thursday, with more than 80 percent of residents voting “yes” to fund several capital projects throughout the district.

In all, nearly 1,000 votes were cast, with the final tally coming in with 777 in support of the one-time referendum against just 220 who stood in opposition of the bond.

The Board of Education met on Friday to formally enter the results of the vote into the record.

Since the summer, board members have been discussing several proposed capital projects, which will make necessary improvements at all schools throughout the district, including a complete technological overhaul.

As part of the renovation of the new Learning Commons, the district is going to renovate half of gyms A and B to construct a new 6,200-square-foot fitness center that will benefit students and student-athletes alike.

At Edgewood Elementary School, the library is set for an expansion, and will be relocated further from the main entrance for increased privacy and space. This was originally set to be two separate projects, but the board found it would be more fiscally efficient to the district to combine the two.

Other improvements include new multipurpose and group instruction spaces at Heathcote Elementary and a new roof at Quaker Ridge.

Outside of the capital projects that will be funded through the proposed bond, the Scarsdale Education Foundation has also pledged funding for a pair of additional projects: a Designer Maker Lab and new fitness center dedicated to former student Tyler Madoff, whose parents donated $300,000 to the cause. Madoff was lost at sea while on a kayak tour of the coast of Hawaii.

The Designer-Maker lab, which will be outfitted in the old auto shop, is set to center on STEAM subjects --  science, technology, engineering, arts and math -- in coordination with the technology initiative once it is up and running.
