Thousands are without power in Westchester and Putnam as a line of severe storms battered the area with heavy downpours, damaging winds and hail just as the evening commute began on Tuesday.

As of 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, NYSEG reported  22,081 outages among its 32,806 customers in the areas it serves in Northern Westchester.

In Putnam,  27,705 of 38,310 customers were without power.

Con Ed reported 325 outages impacting 5,015 customers, including more than 300 customers in Sleepy Hollow, Ossining, Cortlandt, Eastchester, Irvington, Ossining, Yonkers and Bedford as trees and power lines were downed throughout the region.

In New Rochelle alone, 1,383 customers were reporting outages.

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning in effect for the area expired at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday. A Flood Advisory was issued at 4 p.m. and expired at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Tornado warnings issued in parts of the area expired late in the afternoon.

The quick moving storms created a travel nightmare during the evening commute. In addition to downed trees and road closures, Metro-North suspended service on all three of its Hudson Valley lines late Tuesday.

"The spring storm season is officially upon us and as we have experienced far too many times, weather is becoming more severe and unpredictable with each passing day," New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo stated earlier. "While New Yorkers should continue to stay prepared for power outages and wind damage, they should know that the state is closely monitoring this system and stands ready to immediately assist any communities in need.”
